Hi, My name is Ray and our daughter has been having problems opening .doc files from her school computer on our home computer we have windows vista home premium with wordpad and sarahs school has windows xp with ms word..
I would like to know

1.. is your product free?

Yes, it is free to download, install and pass around to others. You can
get it from www.openoffice.org.
2.. does it work on vista, will it open, view, edit xp ms word .doc files on vista?

Yes, the latest versions have been optimized for Vista. It will work
with Word files, other than the latest .DOCX files.
3.. what size is it?

I couldn't say exactly, but the download file is over 100 MB, so
installed it will be a bit more.
4.. can a person not very good with computers work with it as I don't know much about them {I still look for the any key ha ha ha}

It's comparable to Microsoft Office to use. There is a lot of
documentation, tutorials etc., available here:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/

5.. do I need to upgrade from java 6?

Probably not, but you can download it with or without Java. Also, Java
is easy to obtain from www.java.com
6.. is it hard to use and can you only select components you wish to use or do you have to have many different components with it..

OpenOffice is a full integrated office suite, that includes Word
Processor, Spreadsheet and other components. It is recommended that the
entire package be installed.
