Your research was correct. It is compatible with all but the MS Office 2007
file formats.

To create Word documents you can choose to save in Word format when you
first create the file. This is done the first time the file is saved as
follows:
- select File>Save from the menu
- type a name for the file
- Change the "Save as type:" option to "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP"
- check (or tick) the "Automatic file name extension" option
- click Save

To change a file from Writer format to Word format:
- open the file in Writer
- select File>Save As... from the menu
- Change the "Save as type:" option to "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP"
- check (or tick) the "Automatic file name extension" option
- Save

To change Writer's settings so it saves new files in Word format
automatically:
- open Writer
- select Tools>Options... from the menu
- select Load/Save and double-click to open it
- select the General option
- to the right, under the heading Default file format are two lists,
"Document type" and "Always save as"
- change the "Always save as" to the Microsoft format
- change the "Document type" to whatever is next
- repeat the last two steps until you've set all the document types you need
to
