On the assumption she created the document with OpenOffice you have a choice: 1. Download and install OpenOffice onto your computer and use it to open the document. OpenOffice is completely free to download and to use on as many computer(s) as you like so it won't cost anything except time. 2. Download and install the ODF plugin for Microsoft Office so you can open the document directly in Word. It's free from http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/ (ODF is Open Document Format which is an internationally accepted standard format for electronic office documents. 3. Get your student to save the document in Microsoft Word format. She should use the "Save As" option from the File menu and choose Micrsoft Word from the [drop-down] list of available formats. She must also ensure that the little box labelled "Automatic filename extension" is ticked (checked).
