That did it! Yay!

I swear that is exactly what I did last night and could not get it to
work. I think the problem was in ODBCConfig, because when I fired it up
to do this over again I noticed that the User DSN that I created last
night was not listed. Maybe I thought I had created it but it was not
actually created. In any event, I recreated it and later when I did
Connect to Existing Database in Base the User DSN was listed. From then
on it just worked perfectly.

Now we need to take all these travails and instructions and fix them up
in a neat, tidy how-to specifically for connecting Base to a Kexi
database on Linux. The existing wiki has a lot of out of date
information and side trips that have nothing to do with the specifics
of how to connect a Kexi database to Base. Trying to follow the wiki
was a large part of my problems.

Thanks again for all your help!
