Sorry, I misread your note.  =A1-B1 applies only if you have numbers in
those two cells.  You have to think in terms of rows & columns and the
letter & number pair specifies the location of the referenced cell.  So,
if you want to subtract A2 from A1, with the answer in B5, then in B5
you'd have =A1-A2.
