And there are several anti-virus programs freely and easily available. But
they won't find (non-existent) Linux viruses for you, they will find any
windows viruses that are lurking harmlessly on your computer, but might
infect your windows using friends.
I take issue with this: "Ubuntu's desktop install provides a bunch of
useful software for desktop users, but it doesn't install a firewall by
default.". The firewall code is built into the kernel and then enabled,
if desired. I have a Linux box as my firewall connecting to the
internet, but didn't enable the firewall on any of my internal Linux
boxes, other than my notebook.
