The firewall software is built into the kernel. It's not a separate package, as in Windows.
Windows firewall is integrated - you can not remove it.
In fact even NT4 (and probably earlier) had port blocking capabilities as part of OS (in 1997!).
As I've mentioned in other notes, Linux & Unix security is built in and not added on.
This is incorrect statement - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netfilter
"The netfilter/iptables project was started in 1998 [...].
The software they produced (called netfilter from here on) [...] was merged into Linux 2.3 in March 2000."
