To Dave Barton: What "link Box" are you talking about? I have ver.2.3.1
of OOo and when I follow your advice, all I get is a large window with
several files showing.

It sounds like you are "linking" the external picture to your document,
as opposed to "embedding" it. A linked picture only exists on your
computer, therefore it will not appear on the recipient's computer.
Try this:
1. Open a new Writer "test" document.
2. Select the "Insert -> Picture -> From File..." menu option.
3. When the file selection window opens, make sure that the "Link" check
box is _NOT_ ticked/checked.
4. Choose your picture file and click "OK".
Your picture should now be "embedded" in your document.
Pictures/images copied and pasted into documents should always be
embedded. So I cannot explain why that did not work for you.
