I'm a long time user of Openoffice. I am quite comfortable with writer.

But I have NEVER been able to master numbering of headings and outlines. Does it work? Is there an understandable guide somewhere?

I know about Tools > Outline numbering. But numbering always restarts on every new heading. When numbers appear, that is. It seems to be hit and miss.

It only didn't work for me the first time I worked with OpenOffice.org. It took me 10 minutes to find out that it works different from Word. After that it was faster and more stable than I ever had in years of professional use of Word.

I try to apply a numbering to a heading style, but it isn't persistent. For example, I get

1- Heading 1
    1.1 Heading 2
    1.1 Heading 2
    1.1 Heading 2
2- Heading 1
    1.1 Heading 2
    1.1 Heading 2
    1.1 Heading 2

- Apply heading 1 and heading 2 etc to the paragraphs that need it.
- Do not change anything in the numbered style of the headings.
- Do not turn numbering on for indivudial paragraphs that are headings.
- Only go to Tools|Outline numbering.
There, make sure that each 'level' has the right 'Paragraph Style' (1=Heading 1, etc - this is default most situations) and in the box 'Number' choose the style you want. What 'Sublevels' does for you, is clear from the preview at the right of the window.
'OK', and that is it.
Further tweaking can be done in the window Outline Numbering with 'Seperator', and at the tab Position.

Please, someone? Can you point in the right direction, not necessarily towards MS Word?

I wouldn't dare to do that ;-)
If it doesn't work for us, there is something wrong with your version and installation. Never heard problems on this level before, however, but one never knows. In that case, pls inform us about version, operating system, etc.

Success & Regards,
Cor
