Here is the question - I've used Ms Outlook as my e-mail client for years.
Does Open Office have something similar? I did not see anything mentioned in
the product list. Or are you aware of another free, or cheap alternative to
outlook that would be compatible with Open Office?

Mozilla Thunderbird. Has a Calendar extension you can install, which,
(IMHO) is VERY nearly up to all the functionality of Outlook. TBird is
also customisable with various extensions, which Outlook (in general) is
not.
OO can be set to use the Thunderbird Addressbook.
