sorry, second question - can I download and try open office, running ms
office simultaneously without conflict on my XP machine?

OpenOffice does not include an email program.  However, it works well
with Thunderbird, which can be downloaded for free from
www.mozilla.com.  While you're there, you might also want to get
Firefox, which is an excellent browser, so you can avoid using Internet
Explorer.
