This is so weird. I have been trying for two days to install open office on a new Mac Mini. I kept reading about X11 and the settings and trying to do those things. I tried opening OOo and other suggestions. I downloaded a new copy of the software, "unzipped" it (dmg file) and put it in the Application folder, then instead of clicking the icon on the dock bar, I doubled clicked on the application in the application folder. Voila! It worked. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

I've tried what you suggested and I'm still stymied in my efforts to install openoffice.org 2.3.1

I have enough memory (4 GB; need 600 MB) on my hard drive.

I tried the md5sums procedure but could not install the MDHashTool. As currently stated at the URL that I was given below (http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/using_md5sums.html)

the MDHash Tool does not work with current versions of Firefox.

In any case, I doubt the problem is a corrupted download. I downloaded the openoffice.org 2.3 software a second time, and tried to install it. It choked at exactly the same point as the previous one did.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what else I could try?

Thanks,
Roger

1. If the md5sums extension won't install under your version of Firefox, have you tried the Windows program described lower down on the same page?

2. Is this the first time you have installed OpenOffice or are you upgrading from a previous version? If the latter, have you exited its Quickstarter before attempting to install the new version? You could also try the procedure described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 to fix a well known Windows bug in relation to installing software.

3. Perhaps this is caused by your Antivirus program believing the thing is a virus. To try to overcome this:
a) Disconnect your computer completely from the internet
b) Disable your Antivirus (AV) software and your firewall
c) Run the installer; you won't be able to register because you have no internet connection so just say "already registered" or, if you prefer, "registaer later".
d) Enable your AV software and firewall
e) Connect to the internet; never leave your computer connected to the net if your AV software and firewall are not both running properly.

If none of the above works then I'm stuck. I think it will take a Windows guru sitting at your keyboard and "playing" (= "creatively analysing the situation").
