Why doesn't the install remove these files if the install is

Because OOo needs them when uninstalling itself.

I am very puzzled by this and the answer from Manfred. I have only
installed OOo for Windows (98, 2000,XP and Vista) with the current
installer around 200+ times and I always make it a practice to
delete/erase/wipe the installation files directory/folder. For various
reasons I have uninstalled around 20-30 of these same installations and
never encountered any problems due to the absence of the installation files.

To check the validity of my claim, I have just gone to my wife's Vista
based notebook, checked that the OOo 2.3.1 installation files did not
exist and uninstalled it without any errors or problem. I then installed
OOo 2.4.0, which completed perfectly. subsequently deleting/erasing the
installation files and uninstalled OOo 2.4.0 Both uninstall processes
worked perfectly without the need for the original installation files.

I am aware that a number of people have reported problems with the Windows uninstaller failing, but based on my experience I think there is an issue other than the absence of the original installation files.

BTW I did restore OOo 2.4.0 in good working order to my wife's notebook. I am not that brave/stupid ;)
