(I am currently /extremely/ irritated by TB's lack of decent news-
reader filters, which makes some groups virtually unreadable because of unfilterable spam. The mail section of TB has far better filtering - which points to inconsistent and therefore poor internal design. Purely IMO, of course.)
Thunderbirtd 3 will have much improved news-reader filters.

Jam tomorrow - I couldn't even find a beta release of tb3 to try.

But I still think the current differences between news and mail filter facilities points to significant internal design problems. Hopefully addressed in v3; time will tell.

Currently the only binaries to be had, to the best of my knowledge, are from the nightly builds - with a copy of the pre3Alpha binary packages available for a few platforms and languages.

Yesterday I installed the package under WinXP ( only ), in a different path from my current TB2 installation. The TB3 comes right up, using all my TB2 settings - and TB2 is still available and unaffected.

As for filtering against news groups - a quick look finds no difference from the TB2 options - now I don't know if that means anything beyond the fact that this nightly build seems to not have the changes incorporated yet. However, my understanding is that TB3 is in code lock down for the alpha release..so.. If you are actually interested I would suggest that you look over the support mailing list for TB and perhaps ask the question there.
