Thanks for responding to my cry! I am sure you are right that the solution to the quotes problem lies somewhere around 'Custom Quotes', but I have failed totally to make it change anything. As for the Endnotes problem, alas you don't give me any clue about what to do when I reach Footnotes--Endnotes. I've been there countless times with no joy. Thanks so much for trying to help & I'll be glad of any further thoughts on these probs. TS ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ian Stephen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

The second of my three remaining problems with OpenOffice is this: I
successfully converted my Word files, in which quotations were marked by
single inverted commas. These reproduce correctly when printing from

know what they are called, but little vertical dashes without the comma

Ack, OpenWord? It's "Writer" please. It's roots (StarWriter for the Z80
8-bit processor) go back at least as long as Word's (DOS version 1983).

That little rant off my chest, I think your quotes problem may be solved by
looking at

'Tools' -> 'AutoCorrect' -> 'Custom Quotes' tab
and
'Tools' -> 'AutoCorrect' -> 'Options' tab, 'Replace "standard" quotes
with "custom" quotes'

to get the quotes and behaviour you want.

My other problem is that I like to use a rarish font called Charter.
Openword happily converts documents into this, but obstinately leaves all
endnotes untouched. I have had to change these one by one (hugely
laborious, when some of my docs have 200 of them. I must be missing a trick
here. Will anyone be kind enough to help? T. Steel

For this one try 'Tools' -> 'Footnotes' -> 'Endnotes' tab

Adjust styles to your liking. This isn't something I've used myself, so can't offer first-hand experience. Suggest experimenting with a test document to
get familiar with how things change.
