Dear Open Office staff:

Hello. I recently purchased the OpenOffice software. While I am able to open
word documents that are sent to me, others who don't have OpenOffice are having
trouble reading the word documents I send to them via email. How can I format
my word documents in such a way that others can view them?
1) You don't have to buy OpenOffice. It's a free download from www.openoffice.org.

2) You're probably saving in the default ISO standard ODF format, which Microsoft refuses to support. This means you'll have to save in Word format. You can do this in Save as, by selecting the appropriate format from the drop down list. Also, ensure automatic file name extention is selected. You can also email directly in Word format, by clicking on File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word.

You can also recommend OpenOffice to your friends, or have them install the Sun ODF plugin, which adds ODF support to Microsoft Office.
