1) You don't have to buy OpenOffice.  It's a free download from 
www.openoffice.org.

2) You're probably saving in the default ISO standard ODF format, which 
Microsoft refuses to support.  This means you'll have to save in Word 
format.  You can do this in Save as, by selecting the appropriate format 
from the drop down list.  Also, ensure automatic file name extention is 
selected.  You can also email directly in Word format, by clicking on 
File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word.

You can also recommend OpenOffice to your friends, or have them install 
the Sun ODF plugin, which adds ODF support to Microsoft Office.
