My problem is now this: If I type two hyphens & then Enter, an N-dash
appears. But if any other text is entered on that line, the dash reverts to
double hyphens. This occurs if I enter Replace - with --, or -- with -- in
autocorrect. The solution must be close. Please can you advise? TS
This method of producing en-dashes (and em-dashes) is standard procedure
in Word Perfect, Microsoft Office Word, as well as Open Office. It has
worked for people all over the world for years. A naive typer who only
vaguely understands that there are such fancy things as dashes types in
their normal two hyphens instead of a dash (like they would on a
typewriter or in a web forum) and low and behold, the two hyphens
changes into a dash without them doing anything. So we have smart dashes
to go with smart quotation marks.
It just works.
And it works without any insertion by me of anything in autocorrect. I
never suggested that you enter anything in autocorrect under the
“Replace” tab.
Accordingly I don’t have the slightest idea what you are doing.
Just go under the “Options” tab in Autocorrect and make sure there are
ticks in the columns beside the words “Replace dashes”.
Also, it would probably be a good idea to remove anything you have added
to “Replace” under autocorrect in respect to this issue.
