It was a Mexican coin. Numerous references to it may be found in old western movies.

Actually, it was a Spanish coin, called the "milled dollar" Famous from pirate movies and books, this coin had divisions, much like a pie, so that it could be cut up.into eight bits. "Pieces of eight" refers to this coin. The dollar has, for a long time, been spoken of in its fractional forms, two bits= 25 cents, four bits=50 cents, six bits=75 cents. There is no 1 bit coin, but as you see, the original 1 bit was worth 12 1/2 cents.
