It's been more than a dozen years since I used Outlook as a stand-alone
program without Exchange Server (or whatever the successor to Exchange
Server is called these days). I use Outlook as mandated at my employer
(using it right now), but use KMail at home (just so you'll know I'm not
enamoured of MS products...). My question is:
How much of the nifty feature set of "Outlook" depend on its interaction
with the matching Microsoft server, and how much is inherent in the
program itself?
The main functions that Exchange brings to the equation is true sharing of
calendars across the domain, a Global Addressbook, and Public folders - the
stand-alone instance of Outlook can still send Meeting requests to other
stand-alone instances AFAIK, and a calendar CAN be shared within a LAN by
the use of a webdav folder on a server...(but only with Outlook 2007
AFAIK...)
When somebody says that they prefer Outlook, are they really preferring
Outlook, or Outlook-and-Exchange-Server?
That might be debatable! I do know that for example, Mozilla Lightning can
do things that Outlook, with or without Exchange CANNOT do, that is a) email
a reminder from the calendar, and b) subscribe to AND EDIT a remote ics
calendar hosted on something like http://icalx.com
For that matter, if a Microsoft mail server (Exchange or newer) is
available and is handling all your mail, does Outlook give you anything
that Evolution doesn't?
Not currently AFAIK, no. However, Evolution cannot subscribe to a calendar
on a remote server either. At least it couldn't the last time I looked....
I think that most people who want an Outlook-like Client for OpenOffice
are currently using Outlook in an office environment with meetings,
resources, fellow employees, etc. all scheduled by a common calendar
function.Couple that with MS version of IMAP and that's a lot of
server-side functionality that people are attributing to Outlook.
