Shortly after the release of version OO.o 2.4 came a version 1.0.3
release of the SUN Report Builder(SRB). With SRB 1.0.4 a bunch of
peoples reports stopped working, but only those with the latest OO.o
2.4. Earlier versions of OO.o and the 3.0 beta builds didn't suffer from
the problem.
OK - into the issue tracking system then.
SRB 1.0.4 is released to fix it. Nope..
2.4.1 will fix it.
<snip>
Turns out the first fix introduced the second bug. ( LOL - as if that
has never happened before in the software world ;>)
Moral of the story
- sometimes you just have to be persistent.
- it is nice to be able to have contact right into the development
groups, without having to run through 3 layers of interference first.
Does raise a question though - how come only the guys running XP seemed
to have reports that exhibited the problem ( and there where a few who
did so at the web forum).
Could be just by chance that they alone reported it. Coincidences do
commonly occur (and are often then misinterpreted as important in
solving a bug problem).
Check the issue at http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=79121
which was supposed to be fixed with a patch to be applied on OpenOffice
3.0 and was supposedly a duplicate of the issue at
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=66693 .
But it is still not fixed in OpenOffice 3.0 Beta despite being retired
from the listing. So I resubmitted the issue at
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=90129 . So far as I can
see no-one has even looked at it.
Plane 1 Unicode characters still often crash Calc.
Frankly, I expect this bug not to be fixed in OpenOffice 3.0, and expect
that there are lots of other bugs announced as fixed that won’t be
fixed, despite what the issue tracker may claim.
The word “Ruler” still appears in the Insert menu instead of the proper
word “Rule”. How hard is that to fix? Just retype it. See issue
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=63094 .
Then there are the issues that people just won’t fix, like small
capitals appearing too small in OpenOffice. Small capitals should appear
just a little higher than the x-height of the font. (In MS Word they
appear quite a bit higher in most fonts, which is acceptable. I suppose
whoever set this up in MS Word intelligently wanted to be sure that the
small capitals would work in every font. The OOo people aren’t that
intelligent I guess.)
And they just won’t fix this in OpenOffice, though presumably all they
would have to do is change one magic number somewhere in the program.
