Additionally, this list does not have a home page (that I could find)
allowing member options such as "No mail", an option I would have
selected because most topics have no relevance for me. I read one post to
this list in which a list member describes how he periodically
unsubsrcibes when going on vacation, just because there is not a "No
Mail" option. I sense that the same problems that plague commercial
software prevail in the OpenOffice.org developer community.

There has been a lot of discussion along these lines, and maybe the necessary underlying structure of the current list management capabilities will be modified at some point. For now, the main alternatives are to unsubscribe/resubscribe, modify filters to discard messages until they are wanted again, or use the gmane newsgroups to follow the discussions.

Two kinds of problems are common to both OOo developers and to commercial software developers: the need to prioritize where effort is expended, and the need to make decisions based on the information available at the time development is underway, often including knowledge of the existing structure that makes some changes far more difficult than they appear to an outside observer. In both cases, this will leave some, or even many, people's views out of consideration. But OOo has mechanisms like this list, the various forums, and the issue reporting system to express those opinions -- and actually be heard, and often make a difference. In my experience, there is absolutely no comparison between the responsiveness of OOo (and other open source projects) and any commercial development.
