Additionally, this list does not have a home page (that I could find)
allowing member options such as "No mail", an option I would have
selected because most topics have no relevance for me. I read one post to
this list in which a list member describes how he periodically
unsubsrcibes when going on vacation, just because there is not a "No
Mail" option. I sense that the same problems that plague commercial
software prevail in the OpenOffice.org developer community.

What problems specifically are you referring to?

A mailing list works by sending you mail. If you no longer want
to receive mail, you unsubscribe. How would a "no mail" option
make sense for a mailing list?

Whether or not a mailing list is a good means for communication
is a completely different story. If you are looking for a no mail
alternative for discussing issues, try the user forum at
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/

Your complaints are substantiated and I second most of them.
It is good to see that you don't let yourself get carried away
by frustration and just flame the list. The sort of feedback
you provide is most important for the project to learn about
gaps and improve. It is contributing to the project.

*That* is the true value and spirit of open-source software,
not cost or technically superiority.

Thanks
Frank
