Nonsense. The custom installation tree is standard in many programs.
When you selected custom installation OOo presented you with a tree of
selected items that you can choose to install or not. It also allowed
you to select your installation directory of choice.

Just to check I just installed OOo 2.4.1 (windows) using a custom
install and and had it install into C:\OOo. The installation went with
out a hitch. I also instructed the install to associate all Word, Excel
etc files with OOo and following installation that worked perfectly as
well.

I thought that perhaps all went so well because I'd installed on a
Windows 2000 Professional virtual machine, so I rebooted into Windows XP
and did the same. Again, no problems at all.

When you installed, you also complained about OOo not putting icons on
your desktop. FWIW neither does MS Office when installed from scratch.
If you want component icons on your desktop, put them there the same way
that you do when you install MS Office. If you'd like, you can deinstall
MSO completely and reinstall it from scratch and see if the icons
magically appear on your desktop. Also try performing a custom install
to a custom directory and see how that comares for you.

Did you by chance read the information on the Installation Instructions
link on the right hand side of:
http://download.openoffice.org/index.html
This one:
http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html
That tells you that following a proper installation you will find OOo in
the Programs sub-menu of the Start menu. Did you not find it there? Did
it run not properly after you selected one of the OOo components (Write,
Calc, Base, Draw, etc)?

The approach I would like to see would be to

What on earth are you referring to? If you'd like "improvements" then
dig in and participate. OOo is both a product and an an open-source
project. You did read http://about.openoffice.org/index.html and
http://why.openoffice.org/ before you decided to download this program
onto your computer didn't you? If you'd like to contribute you might
want to check out this page:
http://contributing.openoffice.org/index.html

Regarding your complaint about not being able to turn off emails from
this list; this is a mailing list. If you'd prefer to use a 'forum'
information is provided here:

http://support.openoffice.org/index.html in the very first link:

  Free Community Support

    * The OpenOffice.org Community Forum

http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/

When you subscribed to this list you most likely read this:

http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html

On that page you were given options on how to subscribe to the list, the
archives, and an nntp usenet gmane.org service. You were also given
instructions on how to unsubscribe from the list.

Before you start telling the OOo developers what needs to be done (many
who are not paid and donate their time and effort of their own accord)
you might want to familiarize yourself with OpenOffice.org - the product
and project, the list, the list archives, the product and project
documentation, and common courtesy when others take their time to assist
other OOo users and the OOo community.

I'm quite certain that all here appreciate constructive and valid
critisism of OOo - that is what enables the product and project to
improve. No one however, appreciates someone stomping in and declaring
that things are "inferior" and telling the developers what they should
do... particularly when one has just failed to follow simple
instructions on how to install the program.

That said, welcome to the OOo community and the list should you decide
to stay.
