I'm a PC user trying to help a technically indifferent colleague install OpenOffice onto her Mac laptop. My first question is about version - she says she has OS 10.4, but doesn't know whether it's OSX Intel or OSX PC. How can I help her figure that out?

In the upper left corner of her desktop is the so-called Apple Menu. If one of you clicks on it, the first item that pops up is "About This Mac". Click on that, and the "Processor" line will inform you whether the computer is PPC or Intel. Other than that, James Knott is correct that the disk image file may be downloaded and/ or burned as any other file.
