I am curious. Why does one need to search for only "changes" to
get the
relevant help? It would be better is searching for any one of the
following lists that feature: revision, revisioning, changes, proof
reading, and other similar terms used for this.
No /need/ at all. I know the feature's there, and just did an ultra-
quick check to see what was in the help file. As the menu entry is
'edit | changes', I just searched for 'changes', and bingo. Seemed a
quick way to get the OP to the required place. Nothing deeper :-)
I think H.S. is gently suggesting that indexing of the help files
needs to be improved. There are too many features of OO that cannot
be found in the help system unless the searcher knows the 'magic
word'. A new user who searches for 'revision', for instance, is
going to be disappointed...
Aah, OK. I wonder if a KWIC index for the manual and help files would
help at all - could possibly be provided as a help option. But I do
have to admit, I've often found (& not particularly with OOo) that
guessing the words used by the author is 90% of the game; KWIC would
only help a little. I vaguely remember, way back, trying in some
documentation or other to include a variety of more-or-less likely
terminology as well as the necessary to help searchers after Truth to
at least find the right section :-)
The present search facility is pretty primitive - often turns up a
lot of out-of-context terms that may or may not be what's wanted. And
looking for 'revision' is, as you indicate, singularly unhelpful.
Perhaps the developers could set office to remember all the search terms
and when updating retreive this information. Indexing is, in fact, not
an easy discipline. It is no longer relevant to know the subject, the
terms used by the average searcher are actually the most important. Does
anyone know if there is an 'indexing team' with open office?
