It doesn't change them to OpenOffice files. It changes the file association, to make OpenOffice the default application for them. This changes the icon, but the files are still Word files. Even when you run the conversion utility, which creates ODT files, the original files are unchanged.

It would help if you turned off the feature in Windows that hides the extensions on files. Then you would be able to see that your *.doc files are unchanged. If you have Word installed and want to change the association back to Word, you can find instructions for doing that in the FAQ sections on www.openoffice.org
