If you choose to make OO the default handler, does it change the

OpenOffice files, they are Microsoft Word files. My brother keeps

every file on my computer to be called an IrfanView File. Applications
should not claim all files as their own!

When you make OpenOffice the default application for Microsoft Office files, the icon changes to reflect what application is the default. If you have another application that handles MS Office files selected as default, then that one will appear on the icons. This is the way Windows works and has nothing to do with OpenOffice.
