I still haven't discovered how to enter Japanese characters direct from the keyboard. But _1_ click of the mouse (on the uim input pad), followed by another one click for the next character is certainly quicker. (E.g. click-click-click - 3 clicks - instead of Chi-hi-ro -7 letters input from the keyboard.) But my granddaughter agrees with you and wants to use the keyboard, so any pointers would be very welcome.
