Thanks, Henri.  I had clicked thro' to the Kubuntu page, but it still wasn't 
working.  But I have found out why.

For the benefit of others who are as clueless as I am being (and may be one or 
two others ;-)  ), the problem was that I was trying to use Adept, instead of 
Adept Manager. :-(  Come back, Lenny, all is forgiven.

So I have now got the system updated and correct languages installed.

I'll let you know how I get on with the rest of the page you reference.
