I don't use a mac so I can't help you there but I know you can download a version that runs natively on the Mac (no need for X11). You find that here: http://download.openoffice.org/3.0beta/ Just download the version that says MacOSXIntel Aqua. It's 168MB so it will take a while to download depending on how fast your connection is.
