Not that odd, really. I consider using real names for things like that akin to making up an e-mail address without considering whether one such may already (or will in the future) exist. It's unethical and can damage innocent parties. I'm glad they stepped forward with the reason, but I hope there was a lesson learned there, including Murphy's Law and all it can entail.
