When you install OpenOffice, you're given the option of making it the
default application for Microsoft Office applications. If you did
that, OpenOffice should start, though it will not yet recognize the
new Office 2007 files (.DOCX etc.). If you did not make OpenOffice
the default for Microsoft Office files, you can easily do so, by
following these directions:
Changing file associations
Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and
choose the desired application.

Sorry, I missed the part about the .PUB file. That is from Microsoft
Publisher and OpenOffice can't open it.
