I already had that box ticked.  I have just tried ticking "enabled for complex 
text layout", since it was the only thing _not_ ticked, but not surprisingly 
it hasn't helped.

Since my last, I tried in KWord, and it worked, and I have just tried in 
Thunderbird, and it didn't.

So the pattern appears to be: if it's KDE it works, and if it isn't it 
doesn't. :-(

Still, at least she has got a Word Processor that works.  I'm just sorry that 
it isn't OOo, which I myself much prefer.

But thank you very very much Henri for your patience.  And thank you to all 
the others on this list who have contributed over the long haul that I have 
managed to turn this into.

And if any of you, now or after a long rest, has any ideas as to how to 
persuade scim on KDE to work with non-KDE programs, especially OOo, I would 
love to hear from you.
