I'm not sure about the variables - but F2 opens the formula dialogue, 
even in Writer.  Can't check at the moment - pressed for time - but 
I'm [almost] sure this can be done - I'm almost sure variables could 
be defined in a dialogue box somewhere; but I forget where offhand, 
and have never had to reference them in this way.

(Hey - for example, hidden sections can depend on a set variable. 
Maybe there's enough of a hint??????? Otherwise I'll poke around come 
 Monday.)
