Thanks, Mike and Gene! OOo is quite more powerful than I thought!

I discovered that I can use F2 and define a=5, which will simply show
5 in the document. Later in the document I can press F2 again, type
b=a+3, and in the document will be displayed 8.

However, when I go back to the beginning and replace a=5 with a=7, I
would expect the second location to update itself to show 10 instead
of 8. Alas, this does not occur.

Additionally, I cannot find out how to use the defined variables in
the Equation Editor. This is where I really need them.

Thanks for the help so far. If I find the answer to one or both of my
issues, I will post them here.
