I just discovered this one minute before I read your post. In fact, I
came back to mention F9.

Sure. I have a material that I can safely perform a head cut at 200
meters per minute. I am cutting on NC equipment so I can vary the RPM
to keep the linear speed at it's maximum. One particular machine can
go up to 3000 RPM, but I am limited to 2000 RPM by our lubricant.
Different lubes can bring us up to the 3000 RPM limit of the machine.
Let's say that I am stuck on 2000 RPM. At what distance from the
center must I stop increasing the revs?
DISTANCE_FROM_AXIS={200 cdot 10 rsup {3} } over {2 cdot %pi cdot [SPEED]}

I would like to be able to specify SPEED=2000 at the start of the
document, and have this formula look like
200*10^3 / 2*p*2000 = 15.9155
So I know (and anyone reading the paper) that I must stop cutting 15.9
mm from the axis.

But then I use the result 15.9155 later in the paper to see how much
distance the tool had traveled over the surface of the metal:

PASSES={30-DISTANCE_FROM_AXIS}/0.3
sum from{n=0} to{PASSES} {2 cdot %pi cdot (DISTANCE_FROM_AXIS + 0.3 cdot n)}

Naturally, increasing the revs means that I can make more passes at
the same (maximum) linear velocity over the metal, thus getting the
tool running the longest distance at max speed and increasing it's
life (and decreasing the amount of time to make each piece).

As it stands, each time the max RPM changes, I must go in and edit
(and recalculate) seven or eight formulas. Worse, new formulas are
being added all the time and it will be over two dozen by the time I
finish.

If I could use variables in the Equation Editor I would save about an
hours work each time the revs change. And as we experiment with
different lube formulas, the revs change often.
