I recall that Xfig a very power drawing program (to its purpose is
similar to vision and it is not a DTP). What does that default to in
terms of page size? From what I recall, I don't think it defaults to
anything at all! It just fixes the size depending on what is drawn.
Perhaps you could fire up Xfig and see what it gives you.

PS: Xfig is readily available in Linux but can be installed on Windows
as well.
