2002-04-25 The A paper series IS superior to the US sizes. Not because it is metric, but because the sizes vary per the square root of two, allowing for perfect scaling from one size to another. This is not possible with American sizes. Try to scale one size to another and the image never fills the page right and in some cases there is a lot of wasted space.
Don't take my word for it, ask anyone who has experience with both series and see which they prefer and why!
