Subject: RE: measuring enquiries

Mr. Ossipov,

The units of measurement to be used in air and ground operations are governed by Annex 5 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation.  This annex states that the SI units "shall be used as the standard system of units of measurement for all aspects of international civil aviation and ground operations" while certain non-SI units (i.e. feet, nautical miles and knots) "shall be permitted for temporary use as alternative units of measurement".  This is a temporary situation; however, no termination dates have yet been established.

In other words there is a long-term plan to switch to the exclusive use of the SI units.  However, in view of the high costs involved, the Contracting States are rather reluctant to establish any firm dates of termination at this stage.

I hope that this answers your question.

Subject: measuring enquiries

first, I hope you are the proper person to talk with if not please be so kind and pass me the proper name and email address, thanks!

hi,

as you know 95 % percent of all persons on this planet use and know only SI (metric system) which is much more advanced than imperial.
Now my question crops up, why does ICAO forces pilots and many other involved persons to use those absolutely obsolete imperial units?

why can't aviation (and seafaring) be completely metric, there is no reason for feet, miles, knots and fathoms!
I know the bebefit of the nautical mile but there is no benefit anymore, almost every ship/plane is leaded by GPS or ground/air control noboby is navigating by the stars and with a sextant.

It would be kind to receive an answer and not a standard reply

yours,

Michael Ossipov
