Around the lab I'm in we say 'em el' instead of millilitre; we just say the letters in the symbol rather than the word.  I've known people who say "migs per kig' instead of 'milligrams per kilogram', that I don't like.  However, I don't see a problem with simply saying the letters in the SI symbol.
