The fact that it is not yet widely accepted in daily use by those of us in the US is a result of many factors including Americans' superiority complex and our isolationist attitudes. SI is coming in the US but it is coming slowly because of the lack of political leadership to get the ball really rolling. When talking about how widely accepted SI is, be sure to look world wide, not just at the US.
