Steve,
One of the problems in the UK was that the Wilson Government had a majority
that was in single figures and was at the mercy of any politician who
wanted
to score a few cheap points. As a result he had to take a short-term
populist line to stay in power. There was also a sterling crisis, so he
did
anything to save money, one of which was delaying the metrication of road
signs. When he finally retired, he bequeathed Jim Callaghan a majority of
one who promptly had a heart attack and died (if my memory serve me
correctly).
Jim (James) Callaghan only died recently at the ripe old age of 92 - he was
an MP for Cardiff and went on to the Lords.
It was a no confidence vote that brought Thatcher in - killing Socialism in
the UK forever (I hope).
He did however set a gradual metrication of road signs in progress, but
then
Mrs Thatcher, in order to score a few cheap points at the expense of the
EEC
(as it then was), reversed the metrication progress that had been made up
to
that time.
Although an interesting idea I really don't think Mrs Thatcher kept imperial
on the roads for the reasons you mention.
Whose government brought in Liter priced petrol pump?
