I remember seeing Mrs Thatcher on television in 1979 announcing "We have
saved the pint and the mile for Britain" (or words to that effect). While I
might have agreed with some of her policies, her Euroscepticism was an
embarrassment, especially when I was visiting my Dutch relations.

Are you sure? In 1979 she had the unenviable job of creating a cabinet with minority rule filled with left-wingers who loved the EU project ("tory wets") as well as those who would go on to help her create "Thatcherism" ("dry tories"). I cannot see her working on anything but domestic situations in the first few years. (Bear in mind this was during my pre-teens, and my admiration of Thatcher was to come some years later).

Also please remember that her euroscepticism is indicative of the majority view in the UK - and also remember that more recently the Dutch have become a more eurosceptic nation.
