What is a primary display?
Would it be the one you are using for the road on which you are driving?
If so, it could be either English or metric units depending on which country
you are in, but not both.
Many car makes can toggle their digital displays between English (mph) and
metric (km/h) but do not display both at the same time. Analogs have both
printed on the speedometer under the needle to save on cost. I'm surprised to
hear that Mercedes now uses only mph.

I've seen plenty of them that have dual with km/h in very tiny unlit letters
under the larger mph ones but no analog speedometers that display solely in
km/h
I do agree that both should be displayed.
