My only suggestion without seeing the speedometer display on a VW is that you may have to buy a Canadian one. The only requirement when changing the speedometer is to place a sticker on the door beam stating the original mileage when the unit was replaced. This is why it's better to do this when the vehicle is new. I did this with both a Honda Civic in 96 and a Toyota Tacoma in 99. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; FMVSS 101--TechnicalCorrection--Speedometer DisplaySUMMARY: This technical amendment corrects an error in Table 2 ofFederal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 101 as a result of a final rulepublished September 24, 1998. In that notice the agency adoptedlanguage for the speedometer display as ``MPH and/or km/h''. The effectof this language is to allow speedometers labeled in miles per hour(MPH) alone, kilometers per hour (km/h) alone, or both miles andkilometers per hour. The intent was to require speedometer display inmiles per hour, and to allow the addition of kilometers per hour at theoption of the manufacturer. This amendment changes the language ofTable 2 to ``MPH, or MPH and km/h''.

Volkswagen tries too hard to appear American, and as a result they end upwith cars that are overwhelmingly USC. The 2007 Passat and Jetta have tempsin F printed on the coolant dial and on the climate control switch. The speedometer is only in mph. All this is annoying, but it's compensated by the electronic display that can display outside temps in C, calculate fuel efficiency in km/L or L/100 km, use 24h time, etc. That pesky speedometer is the only major problem. Does anyone have an idea how to force it tocalibrate to km/h? This is a first car I've come across that doesn't have adual-display speedometer, and the instructions don't mention switching to km/h. I visit Canada frequently, so displaying my speed in km/h is critical. Thanks, Remek
