I agree with Steve, the word “milometer” is in regular use in the UK. Another
word that is in regular use is “chainage” (as in “chainage markers”) which are
distance markers along the side of a highway or railway. They are still called
“chainage markers” even though nowadays those on the roads are in metric units.
“Chainage markers”, markerd in metric untis are slowly making their way onto
railways – distances on all new railways as well as all tramways and light
metro systems are now in metric units. In addition, railways that use “digital
signalling” (ETCS) (which is currently being rolled out on a number of lines)
also make use of distances given in metric units.

Hi Michael,

Yes - we have a word ‘mileometer’ in the UK.

I have several classic cars and I have to declare a maximum mileage for them
and the form reads ‘mileometer reading’. It’s probably a uniquely British
thing - I’d admit

Stephen, I believe the word is odometer. Unless the British have their own word?

Sweden is safer and they drive on the other side. But I don’t think that has
much to with it. Many accidents here in France with people driving on the wrong
side of the road.

This particular article is 11 years old, so pre Brexit.

The above website list comments on which side would be best to drive on in the
UK. But further down are comments, one of which is to sort out the “muddled
measurements” in the UK. (Below Alex, Birmingham.

With the Brits around here in France, I’ve noticed it’s cheaper to buy a
comparable used car in the UK, but more expensive to buy new in the UK. I
figure it must have something to do with the market available for both new and
used in the UK compared to the rest of Europe. Never mind the accidents from
Brits starting out in the countryside here on the wrong side.
