>From what I heard about the BYU rule, it came to pass during the "hippies"
era where all these free-love druggies wore their hair long and had these
untrimmed, ratty beards--so BYU stuck that in the dress code (er, I mean
Honor Code). After that, there wasn't a big problem any more with ratty
beards--people with facial hair tend to keep it clean and looking
nice--but I guess society's views on beards tended to be a little
different even after that movement had passed. Probably the church's
unofficial "rumor" position on the subject is influenced because of that.

(Of course, that doesn't excuse BYU for trying to photoshop Brigham
Young's beard off quite a few years back, if any of you heard about that
fiasco. I think Hugh Nibley wrote about it in one of his books.)

p.s. ok, this thread is /really/ off-topic now. Pretend this is some
comment that links beards with Unix-based systems somehow and thus
