Paul, if the bearings rotate freely when you turn them with your finger,
they're fine. If they turn roughly, then replace them. I believe they are
sealed bearings and the best thing to do if they're bad or have a lot of
mileage on them is to replace them. They're not too expensive.
The only way I know to take the bearings out is to take a brass or aluminum
rod and tap on the edge of the bearing from the inside of the wheel to get
it out. Move the rod to different spots on the bearing to try to get it to
come out evenly or it may cock and get stuck.
