Bryan - your manual has no reference to DOT 4 because it didn't exist back
then.
The newer parts you added include the newer DOT 4 specification which is
printed on the covers.

Jim & Bryan - There's no compatibility issue between 3 & 4.  As Mario said,
only DOT 5 is based on
the new silicone formulation.

But both of you guys should DRAIN, FLUSH, AND REFILL your entire systems
with ONE type of fluid
whenever doing work like this!
It will save you many woes down the road....
